21st Century Christian Living

This has been on my mind for a very long time. I haven’t been able to put words to my thoughts on the subject but it is something that I haven’t been able to shake off. And also because I always sometimes lay in bed with a certain thing too close for comfort called lazinessJ.  So what’s this thing that has been on my mind? If the title didn’t give it away 🙄 bruh you are a lil slow , then it’s the weight/burden/duty of living as a believer and follower of Jesus Christ in this day and age. I intentionally used the words “believer” and “follower” because the original term “Christian” I believe has become watered down. I don’t want you to have a generic idea of what I’m trying to speak on but I want you to have a very practical view on the subject. I mean what does it mean to be Christian if it isn’t about practicing what you believe. Just like the famous bible phrase “Faith without works is dead” (James 2:14-26).

So my dear friends, how do you live in this world but not get contaminated by the world. There are a couple of scriptures where Jesus acknowledges that though we live in this world, we are not of it (John 17: 14-16) and it talks about being hated because we do not belong to this world (John 15:19). It’s a pretty tough task that cannot be done of ourselves but by the help of the Holy spirit. In John 17:16, Jesus was praying to His father about protecting his disciples from the evil one, He said that even though they (disciples) are saved and are not of this world, He wouldn’t pray to take them out just because they don’t belong but that they be protected. If God’s plan was that we just become saved and become too clean for the world then, as soon as we accept Him, the next thing would be death. We are saved so that by His grace, we can let our lives be an example and testament to God’s power. I noticed that whenever a disciple/apostle healed anyone, it was followed by people glorifying God and turning their lives to Him. Our main purpose is to give God glory and honor Him for who He is. I’m going off track here, so back to the actual purpose – what is it like being a follower of Jesus right now?

It is super tough! People may say that it isn’t any more difficult than it was in the time of Jesus but I disagree. There wasn’t a never ending feed of information that is right at your fingertips.  Doing the right thing is no longer fashionable; people who do the right thing are in the minority. I am not even talking about Believers. I am speaking generally about doing what is right because you know it’s the right thing to do and not because of religion. I am constantly faced with choices between “surviving” and “what will Jesus do WWJD”. The little white lies set us apart from the world. “Us’ being we believers. Manipulating situations to suit your narrative. For example, it’s okay to embellish  lie so as to get a job but it’s  not okay to steal 🤔 . It is okay to have sex fornicate as long as you are in a “committed” relationship but then you point fingers at someone who has multiple partners 🤔. To be real, without grace, we are all doomed. We are not saved because we stop sinning, we stop sinning because we are saved. His grace is what brings to light our imperfections and He makes those weaknesses become our strengths through Him. It’s not because you stop lying or fornicating that you become a believer in Jesus but it is because you believe in Him that you are saved from sin. It took me a long time to understand and believe that my actions and in-actions have zero and I mean zero correlation to God’s love for me- “ Yes, I am sure that nothing can separate us from God’s love—not death, life, angels, or ruling spirits… “Romans 8:38-39 . Ephesians 2:8-9 says “ For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.” I had to pray and really ask God to help me understand and believe these words because in there lies the freedom from the world system that we seek as believers. If you know and believe that there is nothing you or anyone can do to stop what God has planned to do in your life, you will never be at the mercy of your actions or in-actions. You will no longer live like a modern day Pharisee who just want to observe the laws and is self-righteous but their way of living doesn’t reflect God’s love. People who just love to point out all the ways you are a sinner; a child of the devil and are quick to let you know that you are going to burn in hell because you did not go to church 🙄.  Jesus is about love and accepting EVERYBODY! His job is to decide who is doing right or wrong and not you who holds the keys and register to the gates of hell 🙄.

The church is in a serious state of emergency. It is in need of serious revival. Revelations 2:1-7 talks about the loveless church and we are living in that time. Verse 4 – 5 says “Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.” The church is supposed to guide us and help us navigate this life but I feel that majority of them have failed or are failing in doing this. So let us come together to help each other. We have the same goal – following Jesus Christ and we can share our experiences and encourage each other.

I do not believe for a second that God has lowered His standards and expectations because we live in a different era. Isaiah 40:8 says “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.” The same is in 1st Peter 1:24-25. We have the burden to figure out how to honor God while living in this world of sin and remain undefiled. As I said earlier, this can only be accomplished by grace and lots of help from God and not by our human effort. Even when you are super determined to do what is right, the world system itself is built in a way that it defies the existence of God. It’s like I said earlier, a choice between surviving and WWJD?

This piece is an introduction into what I hope is a series on how we can be true believers and followers of Jesus Christ in today’s world. I would try to be more practical in my words, hopefully we can find a way to please God and still enjoy this life.

My hope is that many people can speak about Jesus as who He is – love and we can become the majority again in doing the right thing. We are BELIEVERS and should not be afraid or ashamed of the gospel 2nd Timothy 2:15. 1st Thessalonians 5:6- 19 talks about how we as believers need to be awake, love and comfort each other, be at peace, help the weak and fainthearted and a bunch of other things about encouraging each other in the spirit. I hope that we can do that. I would try hard by His grace to speak more about the true Jesus as He is in the word of God, and speak about daily living in His truth.

WE NEED TO ENCOURAGE EACH OTHER IN THE FAITH JUST AS PAUL SAID IN Hebrews 10: 24-25; And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.”
