You attach your job to your life, it’s supposed to give you life, give you purpose but then it doesn’t. It works for a while but there’s always something missing. Your purpose is in Christ.
A google search defines purpose as “the reason for which something is done or created or for which something exists.”
The thing you do is not your purpose, no matter how much it satisfies you. The thing that you do is a blessing from God. You can’t find purpose because it’s given and not something you acquire. God is your purpose, you find fulfillment in what you do because God gave it to you. The idea that your purpose should feed your life is wrong. If you find yourself doing a job and you don’t like it, you think it’s because it’s not your purpose, No, that doesn’t have anything to do with purpose, you just don’t like the job. It’s that simple. When you don’t like the food that someone cooks, you don’t say “oh the food didn’t fulfill its purpose of nourishing my body”, you just don’t like it. But when you are served your favorite meal, and it tastes amazing, then you say, “I am full, I am satisfied”. It doesn’t matter what nutritional value it provides your body but at that moment, you feel that the food has fulfilled its purpose. Things fulfill purpose, we as individuals just instrument the things, we don’t fulfill purpose.
I am not supposed to find a purpose! Romans 8:28 says “And we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose” which Jeremiah 29:11 hints us on what this may be, “I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. It’s His purpose, and it’s not my duty to find it. The essence of my existence isn’t searching for His purpose. The essence of my existence is in Ecclesiastes 12:13 “The end of the matter, all has been said, fear God and keep His commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.” I’m not sure where this ultimate quest to find “purpose” came from. It’s belittling to think that God created you to just do this one thing your entire life. I may be wrong in all this but the revelation that I can do more than one thing through grace liberates me from the idea that until I find this one thing, my life is a complete waste. There is no one thing that you are created to do. You are created to affect many lives. Indulge me in a little bit of assumption – Ok, so Genesis 6: 3 talks about God saying man’s days will be 120 and Psalm 90:10 says 70-80years. I’ll pick 70, so say you live for 70years and scientifically “correct me if I’m wrong”, our brains fully mature at 25. You are blessed that by 25 you find something you love and label it your
purpose, you want to tell me that for the next 45 years you’ll be doing that one thing? Come off it, you have to be more than one thing! But then, what do I know about life? NOTHING!
I know your argument will be what of pastors? Is their purpose not to preach, uhmm no, because in Acts 26:16 it says we are to be witnesses about what we have seen Him do. It’s everybody’s job to talk about Jesus, whoever is saved has the duty of preaching. Yes, He gives us different gifts but we are not limited to that one special thing you are good at. I mean 1 Corinthians 12: 28 talks about people’s position in the church and how some can speak in tongues and 1Corinthians 14: 28 says there’s no use for that if it can’t be interpreted and he should speak only to himself and God. So, if this person who has decided that His purpose is just to speak in tongue can’t interpret/ doesn’t find an interpreter does that mean he wouldn’t fulfill his purpose? Does that mean he is a total waste of space? Well I don’t think so, I think that he would find something else to do, something as effective. Oh, what about a doctor? He saves lives right, that must be his purpose for existence yea, no either, that’s something he gets to do which he may love and find fulfillment in it because he gets to help others, if this doctor has kids, training them is his purpose, he has a wife, loving her is his purpose, he is in charge of other doctors, making sure they do the right thing is his purpose, we are not created for this illusive one thing without which we are wastes.
Our life is filled with many purposes. We can have passion for something and if we are lucky enough, we can make a living from it. God’s plan for us never mentions chasing after a shadow called purpose. It’s of hope and a future. It’s to be the head and not the tail, it’s to be more than conquerors, it’s to be greater than my teachers, it’s to seek Him and know the hidden truths in secret places.
My take is, you try many different things and one finally clicks, it doesn’t stress you, you can basically do it in your sleep and that’s great. I call that “the work of your hands”/ the “daily bread” He talked about in Matthew 6: 11 and not purpose. I really hope that I’ve been able to pass the message of just living life and stop fretting over being inefficient because you aren’t “fulfilling purpose”.
I am not created for one thing. I am not meant to find one thing and call it my purpose. I am meant to do many things. Love others, be better, help people, tell people about Jesus Christ, support others while I live my life.
Live life and enjoy every moment you find yourself making a difference or just lazing about 🙋♂️ 😉
